Tomatoes are often considered the crown jewel of the home vegetable garden, prized for their unbeatable flavor and versatility. From sweet cherry tomatoes to juicy beefsteaks and rich paste varieties, there is a tomato for every culinary need—salads, sauces, salsas, and sandwiches.

Rich in the antioxidant lycopene, vitamin C, and potassium, tomatoes are a nutritious powerhouse. Although they are heavy feeders and require a bit of attention regarding support and watering, the reward of biting into a sun-warmed, homegrown tomato makes every bit of effort worthwhile.

How to Grow

Sowing Water Light Temp Days Harvest
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, 0.5–1 cm deep. Transplant outdoors when night temps stay above 10°C, spacing 45–60 cm apart. Water consistently at the base to keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal diseases like blight. Full sun (6–8+ hours).

20–25°C (germination)

18–24°C (growing)

6–12 germination

60–90 harvest

Harvest when fruits are fully colored (red, yellow, etc.) and yield slightly to gentle pressure.

Tips

  • Plant deep: When transplanting, bury the stem up to the first set of leaves. The buried stem will sprout new roots, creating a stronger, healthier plant.

  • Support is key: Use stakes, cages, or trellises early on to support the heavy fruit load and keep vines off the ground.

  • Pruning: Pinch off ”suckers” (small shoots growing in the crotch between the main stem and branches) on indeterminate varieties to direct energy into fruit production.
