How to Grow

| Sow directly outdoors as soon as the soil is workable (early spring) or in late summer. Plant 1–2 cm deep in rows 30 cm apart. | Keep soil constantly moist. Dry soil induces stress and causes the plant to ”bolt” (go to seed) quickly. | Full sun to partial shade. Partial shade is beneficial if growing in warmer months. | 10–22°C |
7–14 germination 40–50 harvest |
Harvest baby leaves early or wait for full-sized leaves. Pick outer leaves first to allow the center to keep producing. |
Tips
-
Watch for bolting: Spinach is sensitive to heat and long days. If the plant starts to send up a flower stalk, harvest the whole plant immediately before the leaves turn bitter.
-
Succession planting: Sow small batches every 2 weeks during spring and autumn to ensure a continuous supply of fresh greens.
-
Nutrient needs: Spinach grows fast and loves nitrogen-rich soil. Adding compost before planting helps produce lush, dark green leaves.
