| Sow directly outdoors after the last frost. Poke seeds 2 cm deep into the soil, spaced 20–30 cm apart. Soaking seeds in water overnight can speed up germination. | Water regularly while seedlings are establishing. Once mature, they are somewhat drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering to prevent rot. | Full sun (at least 6 hours) for best flowering. |
15–20°C (germination) Frost-sensitive |

Harvest fresh leaves and flowers continuously. Pick seeds while they are still green and firm if you intend to pickle them (”poor man’s capers”). |
Tips
-
Skip the fertilizer: Nasturtiums actually bloom best in poor soil. If the soil is too rich in nitrogen (fertilizer), you will get an abundance of lush green leaves but very few flowers.
-
Edible landscape: Both the flowers and leaves are edible with a peppery, cress-like flavor. They make a stunning and tasty garnish for salads.
-
Garden helper: They act as a ”trap crop,” luring aphids away from valuable vegetables like beans and cabbages. They also attract beneficial pollinators.
