How to Grow
| Sowing | Water | Light | Temp | Days | Harvest |
| Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow thinly and barely cover with soil (they need some light). Transplant outdoors only when nights are warm (>12°C). | Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Basil hates dry roots. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves and preventing mildew. | Full sun (6–8 hours/day). |
20–25°C (germination) Warm/Frost-free (growing) |
5–10 germination 60–90 harvest |
Harvest leaves continuously. Pinch off the top sets of leaves to encourage the plant to branch out. |
Tips
-
Pinch for bushiness: Regularly pinch off the top pair of leaves on each stem. This forces the plant to grow two new stems from that point, resulting in a large, bushy plant rather than a tall, thin one.
-
Remove flowers: As soon as you see flower buds forming, pinch them off immediately. If the plant flowers, the leaves can turn bitter and tough.
-
Cold sensitive: Basil is extremely sensitive to frost and cold drafts. Do not rush it outdoors; even a light chill can turn the leaves black.
